When I decided I was going to offer music recommendations on this site, it didn’t take much thought as to which album I would highlight first. Day & Nightdriving by Seven Mary Three is one of the best albums I’ve ever heard across all genre’s. Really. You may remember 7M3 as a grunge band of the 90’s with their pop hit “Cumbersome”. You may not remember them at all. They never really became a huge attraction, but they’ve managed to keep it together and change with the times, and for the better. As with all music, it may not be your cup of tea, but if you’re an adult rocker I think you’ll like it, especially if you’ve experienced pain in your life.
This week I’m introducing you to a more refined Seven Mary Three. The days of grunge are gone and thankfully 7M3 realized this. They’ve grown up and so has their music. I place this album into the adult alternative rock category. Kids of the 90’s may look at this album as slow and not the “real” 7M3. I see it as just the opposite. 7M3 appears to have found their calling with a sound that’s authentic and touching. If I had to compare their new sound to other bands, I’d say they are a cross between Springstein and The Eagles. Listen to the lyrics and it’s quite apparent that the songs are about life’s experiences, something that young grunge rockers hadn’t been around long enough to write about. They take you through life in true poetic style. The vocals are strong as is the song writing. In fact, the song writing is some of the best I’ve ever heard. They’ve also clearly experienced pain in their lives and it comes across loud and clear in “Things I stole”. But the real gem of this album is the quiet and haunting “Hammer & A Stone”. I don’t know what instrument is being used half way into the tune, but it gives me goose bumps every time I listen to it. Every song seems to have a real purpose that in one way or another regular people like me can relate to.
Day and Nightdriving has become one of my all time favorite albums. If you’re an adult rocker looking to cut through all of the mindless music of this generation, give yourself a treat and go buy this album. Give it three full spins and you’ll be hooked. It’s truly a hidden gem.
